L'allestimento di uno spazio presuppone la coesistenza di due condizioni essenziali: la temporaneità e l'artificiosità delle sollecitazioni sensoriali trasmesse. Il caso limite è rappresentato dallo stand fieristico, indifferente al contesto nel quale è inserito, e finalizzato solo a rendersi facilmente identificabile e a massimizzare l'effetto pubblicitario della propria immagine.Più sensibile alla integrazione con il contesto e mirato a ottimizzarne la fruibilità percettiva è l'allestimento dedicato a mostre ed esposizioni a carattere museale: qui l'artificiosità è utilizzata per facilitare il percorso percettivo-conoscitivo del visitatore. L'utilizzo di simulazioni virtuali tridimensionali computerizzate permette di ottimizzare la ricerca e la successiva verifica degli effetti voluti.

When exposed to a space which has been fitted out, the senses are aroused by something which is both temporary and artificial. At one extreme is the stand designed for a trade fair which has no rapport with its surroundings and is intended simply to be immediately recognisable and to promote the image of a business. Displays set up for museums and cultural exhibitions, on the other hand, take advantage of and demonstrate a more sensitive response to their surroundings. Here artifice is exploited to assist the visitor's journey of perception and understanding. The use of computerised 3D virtual simulations helps to optimise research and the subsequent verification of the desired effects.
